Insect and Disease Diagnosis

Are your tree(s) not looking the best?? Let Acorn Tree Care assess your tree for problems and recommend a site specific course of action.

Insect and Disease Control

Damage and destruction caused by insects and diseases can severely limit the ability of the trees and shrubs in your landscape to manufacture the sugars and substances needed to remain healthy. As a tree’s health suffers and declines, so do the benefits, both monetary and health, associated with the tree.

A property specific program for trees and shrubs is the best way of managing the spread of harmful insects and devastating diseases.

Our plant health care programs are built on these simple foundations:

  • preventive care
  • frequent monitoring
  • early detection
  • integrated treatment programs

Bracing and Cabling

Cabling involves installing artificial support between major limbs (or stems) to reduce the strain and help support the tree. Cabling also helps reduce stress damage from high winds and excess ice or snow weight.

Trees are subject to a number of environmental forces: heavy wind, snow, and thunderstorms. Due to these factors, branch systems of the tree become weakened.

Some species of trees are  more susceptible to structural damage than others. Generally “soft”  wood trees are on the list of susceptible trees.

Because branches have become weak, it does not necessarily mean the tree has to be removed. In some instances it is possible to retain the tree when bracing, cabling or bolting are employed.  It is also possible to employ more than one artificial support system.

Bolting is employed at the site of a crack or split.  A hole is drilled through the tree at the required location with metal rod being inserted into the hole and capped on both sides with the necessary hardware. The tree, over time, grows over the rod.

Trees grow and change continually and therefore, so do the branches.  We recommend that you have your trees inspected annually.  Existing cables also need to be inspected annually to assess their effectiveness and continued benefit to your tree.

Tree Fertilizing

Acorn Tree Care offers organic, as well as synthetic, tree fertilizers and soil enhancers.  Fertilizing is employed to amend soil, improve the overall structure of your soil as well as help your plants grow.

Method

There are two main methods that are employed to fertilize.

The first is Vertical Mulching.  Vertical Mulching is undertaken using a gas powered auger to drill holes in your soil in and around the dripline of your tree. The holes are filled with site specific fertilizer mixture and raked out to become inconspicuous.  Over time the holes collapse helping with any compaction issues.

The second method is Liquid injection. Liquid injection is undertaken using a tank filled with the fertilizer and water mixture. It is pumped out of the tank through a wand that is injected into the ground where the fertilizer is released into the soil.  Liquid Fertilizer is a fast acting fertilizer.

Tree Removal

Like all life forms, trees grow old and die. And a dead tree is a potentially hazardous tree. Acorn Tree Care is fully equipped to remove trees from all sites in a safe manner. In a residential area, where a large tree must be removed, the company may employ the use of cranes and other heavy equipment.

Other criteria for removal are as follows:

  • Disease: Sometimes a tree’s problems are so advanced that it can’t be treated. At this point it may make sense to remove the tree entirely to protect other vulnerable trees or species on the same site.
  • Invasive species such as Buckthorn, Manitoba Maple, Norway maple.
  • Renovations: Adding a pool to your landscape? Gazebo? Storage shed?

Brush Chipping/Clean up

Are you tired of looking at that brush pile on your property that keeps getting bigger from year to year?

Our staff at Acorn Tree Care will undertake the chipping of the brush in a safe and professional manner.

Tree Pruning

Our expert staff undertakes pruning and follows ANSI 3000 pruning standards which will:

  • remove old, less productive wood
  • remove dead and dying wood
  • remove diseased wood
  • control shape and size
  • train/redirect growth
  • promote vigorous new stems
  • promote wide angle branching
  • produce better fruit and flower

Stump Grinding

We specialize in grinding your tree stumps to enable you to replant what you desire.

Planting and Transplanting

Is your backyard looking bare? Have a tree that looks out of place? Why not plant a new tree(s) or move that misplaced tree?

Acorn Tree Care will assess your available space to give you recommendations based on your specific site.

Root Care/ Maintenance

Are you building a new home or installing an inground pool?  Are there tree roots exposed due to excavation?

Contact Acorn Tree Care to assess the roots for decay and the requirement of proper cuts to ensure the survival of  the root.

Mulching

Scientific studies have proven the benefits of mulching over the tree’s root system, such as:

  • Maintains soil moisture by dispersing water properly
  • Regulates the temperature of the soil
  • Adds nutrients to the soil during the decomposition process
  • Provides a pleasing , natural aesthetic to any landscape design
  • Reduced trunk damage from lawnmowers and string trimmers

We encourage the placement of mulch over the root systems of trees. The practice replicates the environment of the forest floor, which is naturally mulched with decaying leaves, branches and other matter and which provides the necessary nutrients for sustained growth and health.  Over the long-term, trees that are mulched require less maintenance and therefore less cost.
